Picking the Right Women’s Cowgirl Jean Style, Part 1

Whether you’re a true cowgirl who rides regularly or just someone who enjoys the cowgirl look, one of the most important materials when crafting your look is the jeans you choose. Vital for both practical and aesthetic needs, jeans are one of the foundations of any Western style, and can also play a big functional role for those who ride often.

At AA Callister, we have a huge selection of women’s jeans and pants to go along with our straw cowgirl hats, farrier supplies, cinch clothing and many other related items. There are several distinct jean styles out there for the Western cowgirl, plus a few basic factors you should consider when choosing the right option for yourself or a loved one. This two-part blog will examine a few of these factors while discussing each of the popular Western jean styles available to you today.

Stretching and Sizing Tip

One of the key considerations when purchasing any pair of jeans is the fact that most jean options stretch to some degree. Some choose to buy a bigger style because of this, but this can lead to bagginess and other concerns in some cases.

We have a simpler trick for you to employ here: When trying on a pair of jeans, attempt to slide your hand into the back waistband. If you can fit your entire hand here without forcing it, it’s likely you have a bit too loose a pair, and should consider something a bit tighter. If you can only fit one or two fingers, however, this is generally the optimal range. Leaving this much space allows for some minor weight fluctuations or body changes while also keeping you comfortable and looking great.

Now, let’s dig into some of the styles available to you when it comes to Western jean options.

Regular/Boot Cut

The most common and popular Western jean style is the regular or boot cut, a multi-purpose jean option that’s great for a variety of buyers. These jeans are perfect for everyday casual wear, with the same basic shape and pockets you expect from a standard pair.

They’re also excellent for those who have practical needs, such as regular horse riding or even just working outside. They can be rolled up or cuffed as needed, and widen as they reach the ankle, leaving room to slip any variety of boot underneath them.

Trousers or Flares

Modern Western wear is experiencing a few throwbacks to retro jean styles, and a great example is the trouser or flare options popping up all over the place. These are jeans meant to show off a style, with a tighter fit through the thigh but a widening bell-bottom style beginning at the knee and moving down. The wider you want the bell-bottom, the more these “flare” out and represent your style. Moderate flare options are some of the most commonly worn in the show pen and related areas.
