Day-Of Tips and Considerations for Western Horse Shows

Particularly as we head into the warmer seasons of the year, cowboys and cowgirls everywhere are preparing for the busy season in the world of horse shows. At AA Callister, we have all the materials you could need to be fully prepared for a show, from tack shop supplies and horse care materials to every area of Western clothing that you might require.

We’re also here to offer our expertise and tips from decades of experience in this world. While preparing for a horse show is often a weeks-long process, the day of the show itself is one that comes with a few particular areas to be sure of. Here are a few unique tips for ensuring your show day goes smoothly.

Horse Basics

First and foremost, ensuring your animal has everything it needs should be at the top of your list. Many of these necessities will be somewhat obvious, such as saddles, blankets, collars, spurs, bridles and other materials. Ensure all these primary elements are in their proper storage locations before setting out.

In addition, you need to ensure you have the proper supplies to keep your horse comfortable and happy for the entirety of the trip. Make sure you bring enough hay and grain to get them through the full show, plus some extra just in case. Always shoot to over-pack a bit rather than even slightly risking not having enough of the required supplies.

Boots and Polish

One of the first things that separates professional exhibitors from amateurs? Looking sharp, including well-polished cowboy boots. In fact, certain show areas such as showmanship and halter classes actually prioritize a sharp look from the horse owner, and you may be docked if your boots are scuffed or otherwise dirty. Bring a basic wipe or towel with you to remove any last-minute dirt before you enter the arena.

Well-Starched Shirt

Down similar lines, no matter which sort of outfit you choose (or is dictated by your event), know that it could make a real impression on judges and others in the arena. Make sure any shirt you wear is well-starched and stored in a garment bag before being worn, rather than scrunched up in a bag somewhere. Overall appearance of both the rider and animal are absolutely show factors to consider.

Shaped Hats

Finally, to top off your appearance, the proper shaped cowboy hat goes a long way. Much of this comes down to storage – if you simply toss your hat into a pile when you aren’t wearing it and leave it in a trailer for months at a time, it will lose its shape and make you appear unprofessional. At least 24 hours before the show, or longer in some cases, assess your hat’s shape and cleanliness.
